200 yellow roses were distributed in half an hour to passers -by in Weymouth town centre on Saturday the 5th Nov 2016 as a gesture of friendship and welcome to the migrant community in Dorset. A lot more people were encouraged to write messages of welcome and the messages were displayed on a board.
Despite the cold wind, hundreds of people joined in and confirmed the positive impact that migrants are making to the local area and confirmed their openness to have a multicultural and diverse Dorset.
A similar event was organised in Bournemouth in July following the referendum and was also a great success. At the time, people had asked that similar events happened on a regular basis in various towns across Dorset, so the Weymouth event was the second of its kind.
The Weymouth event was organised by Dorset Race Equality Council who were joined by volunteers from Dorset County Council, The South West Dorset Multicultural Network, Unison and a few community members.
Please find here the list of events organised by the Umoja network to celebrate Black History Month during October. Please note that most of the events take place at the Sovereign Centre in Boscombe.
To celebrate Black History Month this October, local NHS Trust Dorset HealthCare has teamed up with various local equality and diversity groups, local councils and colleges to host a series of events open to the local community.
