Dorset Police App to tackle hate crime

HateCrimeAppDorset Police has joined forces with the Borough of Poole and Bournemouth Borough Council and launch a pioneering app for iPhone and android smart phones to help victims of hate crime.

The app helps the most vulnerable members of society understand how to deal with the traumatic effect of such crimes, why it happens, how to report it and where to seek help and support.

As hate crime is thought to be widely under- reported, the app allows individuals to report instances in the privacy of their own safe environment.

Adnan Chaudry, Chief Executive of Dorset Race Equality Council, said: “I am delighted with this great initiative. We know that there is still under-reporting of hate crime in Dorset and this app will make it easier for people to report incidents easily and quickly.”

The Hate Crime 2 app sponsored by Dorset Police is available from the iTunes and Google Play storesThe app was produced by C5 Consultancy and is based on their book ‘Helping Victims of Hate Crime’.

Hamid Samiy, of C5 Consultancy, said: “If the book or the app manages to save just one person from this despicable kind of crime, then it has all been worth it.”

Superintendent Mick Rogers, Dorset Police hate crime lead, said: “The importance of reporting hate incidents and crimes cannot be underestimated. We strongly encourage people to report however they feel comfortable.

“The priority for us is to ensure that victims of hate incidents and crimes are supported and that appropriate actions are taken and we do this through a partnership approach.”

An event to formally launch the app is taking place on Tuesday 22 April at 10am at the Civic Centre, Poole. This event will bring together the key stakeholders and will raise awareness of the app with communities and supporting agencies.
